After being arrested for drunken behaviour, Clay Treyton (Kyle Chandler) hits an officer and is sent to prison for two years. After one week he is assigned to the prison ranch run by Ry Weston (Jon Voight), a former rodeo champion serving life imprisonment for murder. Clay hopes to compete against Ry at the next Tri-State Prison Rodeo but a local drug runner does not want him to get involved.
